It's hard to say what a good distro is, since everyone has particular favorites. What have your issues been with Ubuntu 7.4? Maybe we can help you fix them.

If you're looking for another distro, Distrowatch has a good list of them, and there's also a distro chooser quiz in the newbie thread.

As far as IM programs: Pidgin has been working on it for some time, but does not yet support it. I used aMSN on my Mac and it supported webcams, but I don't know about the Linux version. Give it a try.

I'm pretty sure kopete supports webcam too... The real question is does your webcam support linux? You're going to need drivers to get it working. If you can find those, then there are several programs that can use your webcam.

Ubuntu is perfect in all aspects and support most of hardware out of box.
what problems do you have with Ubuntu?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

You don't need to install WINE to play UT 2004. There is a native Linux version of the client available on the actual game disc.

haha, I'm not surprised... How often does commercial software come with linux compatibility? The install cd would be the last place I would look for getting a paid-for program to work on linux
