    installing linux on my laptop...

hello, i am a noobie to the world of linux...

i have a dell inspiron 1200 laptop currently running winxp/256mb Ram
i would like to install a dual boot linux OS on the machine. i tried ubuntu for a while, however it did not support my wireless card, and the OS was really better suited to a faster computer... i am just looking for an OS that will let me surf the web, support my wireless card, and run a bit faster than windows currently does... any suggestions?

    thanks!

As far as I know, if Ubuntu dosnt support your wireless out of the box, then theres little hope of another distro supporting it.

You might have hope configuring it manually. We could help you if you give us the make/model of your wireless card.

you can try Xubuntu. it has lighter DE, Xfce. you have to work on Wireless Card in that too.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

i did some googling, and apparently there are ways to install my wireless card, however, i have no experience entering code w/linux at all. im not on the laptop now, ill post the the number when i get home. im thinking it was either 1309 or 1401, something like that... im really not looking for an OS with beautiful graphics, i'd rather have a faster computer.

asa i suggested earlier, Xfce ( Xubuntu ) is lighter DE and it is much faster than GNOME ( Ubuntu ).
check this link for Basic Linux Commands.
