    dvd r/rw not copying files

I have been messing around with an old computer using Kubuntu for a couple of months now. I installed a new Pioneer dvr-112d DVD R/RW but am having some issues.

I am trying to copy files from a back-up DVD I made of my XP machine. during the drag and drop copy process I get this error on random files "Cannot copy file: file path and name". It does not do this on all files and when I repeat the process it does not do it on the same files. The DVD copies fine into my other XP machine. I figure because of the above it is not the DVD but either the drive is defective or there is something up with the OS.

Also, my new dvd drive does not show up in my /media folder like my cdrom and floppy drives. What is up with that and could it be related to the drive errors. How can I change the speed at which the drive rips files from the dvd? I think this might be ab issue.

    Thanks for any help!

Fixed problem but cant play DVDs

Ok, I do not know why but the DVD player did not like being connected on the same cable as my super old Toshiba. Would an 80 pin cable allow both to be connected?

The dvd drive works for transferring files now but I still cannot play DVDS with it. Is it true that linux cannot play dvds because of copy right protection issues?

I get this error when I try to play a dvd with Kb3: "No plugin found to handle this resource" and then when I get details "xine: couldn't find demux...".

How can I watch dvd movies with Linux.

    Thanks

you need to get dvd libraries for watching dvd on linux.

    get VLC or Mplayer

which are capable of playing dvd's

you can search your package manager for these two softwares and install them

If you have any problem in finding/installing these packages post your linux distro details

    Execute this
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install vlc
VLC player supports all Media formats.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Thanks all,

I will check these out. I just finished putting together another system with kubuntu for a friend so these will help out. Linux forums: saving computers one question at a time!
