Is your Windows and Ubuntu Virtual machine on same network?
ensure they are in same subnet and have same network id.

Its better to use network bridge for virtual machine in vmware instead of NAT or host only network.

Firewall problem

I did some more checking and found my fw did not have exceptions for ICMP set so all ping requests were dropped. I Made some exceptions and all is well.

Thanks
