slim and xfce4

I'm running arch right now. When I log using slim I get the message "Failed to execute Login Command".
I edited /etc/inittab to boot to X11 and use slim, which it does just fine. I also edited ~/.xinitrc so that everything is commented out except "exec xfce4-session".
The defualt line in my .xinitrc was "exec startxfce4" but that didn't work so I changed it to "xfce4-session" which also isn't working. xinitrc is executable as well. So can anybody help me out here?

thanks
