Rpm?

Is there any advantages or disadvantages of having this in a distro?

Um, could you perhaps explain what you mean? In what context?

Yes, meaning in the limitation (if any) of any free software or the possible total number in the repositories.

Also the possibilities of downloading from outside sources from tarballs - which I yet to understand how to do.

Compatibility with other distros that don't have RPM if I were to want to use certain saved personal text and so forth there.

Hey u can always install a .rpm software on other distro too,,,like a debian based distro(for example ubuntu). For this purpose u'll have to install alien ,,,,and read the readme files regarding help on converting a .rpm to .deb.
Also u need to be a litttle more specific aand clear about ur questions.
