question on portage update
Now THIS is what a linux distro is supposed to be...had almost given up on linux until I tried Yoper...Looks like I might keep this one around.
I received this message after a sync in bash. Would someone help me with it. I have no idea what to do next:
An update to portage is available. It is _highly_ recommended
* that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated.
* Please do so and then update ALL of your configuration files.
root@yos helios # /usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2004
bash: /usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2004: Permission denied
root@yos helios # update portage
bash: update: command not found
root@yos helios # apt-get update portage
E: Sources list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/portage.list doesn't exist
root@yos helios #
You can see I made some clumsy attempts at doing it but obviously it didnt work. thank you for your help. I will return the favors as soon as I am able to learn this distro and be of some help.

thank you, but what would this message be?
the command line never ceases to amaze me...I have been hacking around with linux for 5 months but only the main players like mandrake, xandros, fc2, etc...never touched gentoo. I ran your "emerge portage" command and stuff screamed by for 30 minutes, and ended in this message at the end
!!! ERROR: sys-apps/cronbase-0.3.1 failed.
!!! Function keepdir, Line 270, Exitcode 1
!!! Failed to create .keep in /var/tmp/portage/cronbase-0.3.1/image///var/spool/cron
Do I need to do anything about this?
thanx

well, portage was made for gentoo, not Yoper, if you want to isntall w/ an automated package system in Yoper, i would recommend apt-get in all honesty you really have to put ALOT into your make.conf to truly feel the power of the tweak.

I've never used yoper, but emerge -uvD would be strongly advised over -Uvd, as -U horribly breaks portage (in Gentoo).
Me & Myself just ganged up on I....... Now We all have problems..and none of Us are speaking!

portage is experimental and right now out-of-date. We may be getting it going again soon, really depends on how much users want it and who we can find on the dev team that's capable.
apt-gettinmg yoper rpm's or source installing are your best bets, though you can try many other methods including installpkg, alien converting rpm's to debs, or using non-optimized rpm's from other distros. Some of these methods have the potential to break Yoper's apt.
