    I always recommend Ubuntu to new Linux users, because it is very easy to use, install drivers for your graphics card and codecs. As most Linux distributions, it is free. The new version will be released in April 23rd, so you may want to wait until then.
    You can always switch to another distribution, once you get comfortable with Ubuntu.

    What hardware do you have?If it is older than P4 or has less than 512MB of RAM, it is better to use a lighter distribution.
