    Booting From a DVD

My old Dell boots fine from a CD, but not from a DVD. Many distros have their Live disks on DVD now instead of CD, and I'd love to try them out. Since my computer will boot fine from a CD, why not from a DVD? Is there anything I can do fix that?

    Output of “lspci”

Does that Dell have a dvd drive or cd drive?
You might be able to tell by looking at the drive bay.

You might also want to look at the output of the lshw command, if it's installed on your system. If not, it isn't hard to install.

What kind of 'old Dell' is it?
I had an Optiplex that came equipped with a CD-ROM. Installing a DVD-ROM was simple enough, however.

Dell Dimension B110. Runs Xubuntu 10.04 really nicely! I have no real need to change, but I worry a little that the next Xubu LTS might outrun this old hardware. If so I'll have a look at SalineOS I think - and I won't need to worry about booting from a DVD. But in the interest of "learning Linux," I still want to solve this little issue.

It plays DVD's, so I assume it can read them. It just won't boot from a DVD.

    Thanks so much, everyone!

WARNING: you should run this program as super-user
    Code:

If it will play DVD's, more than likely, it should boot them also provided the machine supports booting from the CD/DVD drive, which you said it does. Check the BIOS settings to be certain that booting from CD/DVD is enabled.
I would have to assume the problem is somewhere between downloading the ISO and burning it to disk. Did you test the checksums of the downloaded ISO? Can you try the disk in another machine? Has it failed more than once?

Adding to Mike's thoughts, can you boot a DVD in this machine that was burned on another computer?

    Thanks everyone, so much!

It's late now and I've got school tomorrow, but I've taken careful notes on all this and tomorrow when I get home I'll try out all your suggestions. -lshw as root, I always match checksums anyway, and I'll check my BIOS to make sure booting from a DVD is enabled.

I'll post the results here after I've had a chance to play with it some more after school and chores and homework and such. Busy week at work and school, so if I'm late don't think I've given up!

    Thanks again everyone!

    Hi!

It was the BIOS settings, thanks to my big brother for helping me fix it. Not a "Linux issue" at all. Marking it SOLVED.

    Thanks everyone!
