    Try using Kpackage or whatever that is. It might not make a difference at all, but I got real tired of using Synaptic when I had Mepis and I found that Kpackage worked better .

    Did you check the apt.conf proxy setting

    Please do the following

    vi /etc/apt/apt.conf

    change the lines within the braces to match your settings

    __________________________________________________ ________

    HTTP {

    Proxy "http://<Your proxy server>:<Port Number>";

    };

    __________________________________________________ __________

    Please ask your systems administrator for your proxy servers name and port.

    * apt-get is working fine in your machine.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
