    i am fairly new to linux, and do not know how to use most features. i have downloaded the .tar.gz of the firefox downloader. when i go to open this file, it asked me what program i should open it with. what program should i open it with?

    firefox downloader ??? isn't it a firefox browser ???
    right click on the file and select 'extract here' ... you will get a folder with a same name.. read README file in the folder.....
