I can't get my optical mouse to work on Mepis Linux
I have a GE WK 1805 optical mouse. Problem is Mepis Linux does not recognize it so for now I'm using my el-cheepo ball mouse. What can I do to make my optical mouse work? I'm using mepis 6.0.
I am fairly new to Linux. Uh oh!!!

Can you post the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please? Specifically the section that deals with your mouse. This is most likely called "Generic Mouse"

I fugured it out but thanks for your help anyways.
I had to make a change in this section of xorg.conf:
Where I have highlighted in the code is where I made the change. It originally read, "Option "Protocol" "Microsoft". I changed it to Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2". Not only the mouse itself works, I can also use the center scroll knob. I'm all set now.Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Serial Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS0"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false"
Option "Emulate3Timeout" "70"
EndSection
What I don't get is why does it say "Serial Mouse" in the Identfier even though the mouse I'm using is a PS/2. It doesn't seem to effect my mouse any so I never bothered to make any change in that area but my mouse is working despite what the Identfier says.

The identifier is only a name to refer to, doesn't do aything on how your mouse works.

So I can't get my mouse to work on boot. I have to use the keyboard to configure my computer and choose the WRONG mouse and then choose the right one. No matter what I do, it defaults to generic and I tried getting it right in xorg.conf, but I still have that problem....
wait, thats in Mandriva. Mepis had no issues, but do you have any suggestions?
