Problem with inspirion display

Hi,
I have a dell inspirion 1100 and just installed mepis 6. I face a problem with the display (it happens on the particular model). Only a small area on the center of the screen works. I read the instructions from this website:

When i run the 845patch i get this output:

root@2[845patch]# ./845patch 16384
i845G chipset found
If you get a segmentation fault, call: ./845patch 16384 nocheck
BIOS currently knows of 1024 kB of VideoRAM
Successfully setting size to 16384 kB

but nothing happens.

Any help will be appreciated.

step one is to update the bios, make sure you get the most recent version from the dell website

step two you should be able to go into the bios and set the video memory from 1m to 8m

That may cure the problem or you may still need to do some tweaking.

The BIOS upgrade did the trick. Though dell for some reason had only a windows/dos executable.
