Shoot for Ubuntu. Very easy install.
Ubuntu will guide you through the dual boot. Here's a good visual guide:

The good way for newbies to start on this forums is to go Here
and regarding Dualbooting every linux operating system installs a boot loader through which you can do dual booting.
Regarding Harddisk partioning you must be causious. So read installation guides of Distro you choose before you go for partioninglife is the greatest opportunity that the nature had given you

I want to use Knoppix
- 07-30-2007 #6
if i am not wrong Knoppix comes with LILO, when you'll start to install knoppix to your harddrive, for bootloader section LILO detecs windows automaticly and also add Knoppix to your MBR.
After installation, you'll reboot your computer and LILO will list the two operating system.
ıf you have partitioned your hard drive, you don't need to do anything for dual boot. The most important part is partition the hard drive.

It looks like you can only burn it to a cd and boot of that.
how to I install it to my hard drive?

yes you are right, Knoppix is a Live Linux System, if you wanto to install it on your hard drive, just open a terminal and then type: "knoppix-installer"
ps:knoppix-installer command is not permanent, it can change as Knoppix version.
