I am new to Linux and the reason I am writing this is I am tired of paying people to work on my server.
I have a small webserver that I use to host friends websites and my churches website and things like this. Make no bones about it I do not make any money off the server at all. Its more of a hobby.
My problem is I dont know any of the commands to do anything with the server plus I am scared I may mess something up so I dont know how to do backups in Linux at all so my question is, where is the best place I could go to learn these things so I can take care of my own server so I dont have to depend on someone else to do it?
I am lucky because I helped a friend of mine start a gaming server company 5 years ago and I helped him build the business up and now he lets me place my server on his backbone and I dont get charged for bandwidth but then again I dont use alot.
I do have an old computer that I can set up and install CentOS on to mess with but again I wouldnt even know how to install it and configure it LOL.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Get yourself a book on Red Hat or Fedora e.g. Red Hat Fedora Unleashed or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Administration Unleashed. They are good for beginners and walk you through the installation procedure to setting up and administering servers. Also take a look at the install deployment guides for RHEL which are available here.
