I do like Gnome 3, but Classic works just fine on Fedora/Ubuntu
By Classic, I assume you mean the GNOME 2.x series? If so, then I still use it, yeah. But I also use GNOME 3, but in fallback mode, heavily modded to look like GNOME 2.x (not quite Cinnamon, but similar).
It's getting some age on it, but some people are still using it in one form or another. You can check the release history to see how old each segment of Gnome is by taking a look at the release history down toward the bottom of the following wiki page:Quote:
Is Gnome Classic really that old, does anyone still use it?

You know, I've never gotten around to trying MATE, or Cinnamon.
Early on, I was afraid that MATE might not hang around long, but the developer seems to be sticking with it, and gathering followers. I've been hesitant to try Cinnamon because I don't generally use many packages from the Arch User Repository (AUR), and that's where the Cinnamon package is.
Maybe some weekend when boredom strikes, I'll give them both a whirl!
I never got around to using them, either. I was always quite pleased with IceWM even before Gnome 3 reared its' head.
But I tried Gnome 3, and Unity for that matter, and wasn't pleased.
But there's my 2 and a half cents.;)
When I was first exposed to GNOME 3, yeah, not love at first sight. I read about Cinnamon and tried it for a while, figuring it was exactly what I wanted. What I found was that I actually preferred GNOME 3, at least after using the gnome-tweak-tool and the GNOME Shell Extensions to make it more user-friendly (to me, anyway).
I've been using Ubuntu since 2007, but when the LTS expires next year on Lucid Lynx, I'm switching to Mint. Mint uses MATE (which took over from Gnome 2) and Cinnamon (which is Gnome 3 but adjusted to look like 2.) Unity is the worst abomination I've seen on my screen since Win ME. Sure, you can add Gnome 2 to Ubuntu, but I'd rather stick with a distributions that supports the major packages I use. Much as I like Ubuntu, if they are sticking with Unity, they are saying "bye" to me.
