Lame

I am trying to compile the latest version of lame, but I get the error message:configure:3108: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

I have compiled lame many times on other distros with no problem. I have gcc installed. This error occurs on the ./configure part. How do I fix this in Mepis 7.0?
