synaptic pkg mgr - Pclos
hello,
there is one application and one font i would like to install. the two items are unrealted to each other. i have found advice encouraging the use of the package manager. that makes sense to me.
what does not make sense is how to get the application and/or font installed and useable. appears to me i can only install packages from one of the repositories.
i have tried to add a repository and got no result - not even an error message.
the two items i am trying to add are:
http://www.pgdp.net/c/faq/DPCustomMono2.ttf
and
http://x-word.org/xword-1.0.tar.gz
i suspect i have some very fundamental misunderstanding about this but have not yet found a tutorial or user manual to help me.

Welcome to the forums!

Whenever possible, it's best to use packages that were created specifically for the distro you are using. When those packages don't exist, you can install from source if needed. Check this HowTo for a number of different ways to install software under Linux. Post #2 covers installing from source.
You are correct that it's generally best for new users to use the default package tool for a distro when it comes to installing software. I don't run PCLinuxOS, or use Synaptic so maybe someone else will jump in here with some help on getting your repos setup.oz

Add PCLinuxOS Synaptic Repository
Bill,
I am also a newbie, but, if you have not already solved your problem, I may be able to help.
First hint, here is the address of the PCLinuxOS help forum:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/
This is the place to ask questions that are pclos-specific, and even many that are more general. The guys here REALLY know pclos.
Next hint, Synaptic should already show you a long list of the items in its repository, as long as one is selected. If it does not show one you want, or if you do not recognize it, that is a separate issue.
If it is empty, you should be able to select a repo with Settings > Repositories in Synaptic. You open this, then check which one(s) you want. Probably start with only one.
Third hint, before installing any Synaptic program, first go to Edit > Reload and reload the contents of the already selected repo(s). This is very important the first time you use Synaptic.
Good luck,
Jan
