(I have reloaded Synaptic and said to update it, but nothing
changes in the ClamAV area.)

ClamAV anti virus defs
followed the instructions. Here is what I get:
[root@localhost doug]# freshclam
ERROR: Please edit the example config file /etc/freshclam.conf
ERROR: Can't open/parse the config file /etc/freshclam.conf
On checking, I find there is no such file, /etc/freshclam.conf
I guess there is supposed to be one--where would I get it?
(I loaded ClamAV from Synaptic, along with all the other ClamAV things listed there.)

Odd that it didn't create a file. But you can make a simple template.
Take a look here: freshclam?
It's from the PCLinuxOS forum where a user was having some problems with ClamAV.
The reason I linked to that page is because there is also a post of someones freshclam.conf file.Jay
