given your level of expertise, i would suggest a reinstall.

in the future, be MUCH MORE CAREFUL with installing apps.
the usual way of software installation on linux is THROUGH PACKET MANAGEMENT, and not through the wild wild web.

incidentally, that would have been your synaptic application.

you must remember that on linux, YOU are responsible.
YOU have been given the keys to the car. YOU are in the driver seat, and not some big company. take care not to crash it.

if you still have problems with libreoffice after a reinstall, open a new thread for that.
    I reinstalled
no big deal - less than half an hour
Now I see that LibreOffice manager takes care of the updates
I was with Ubuntu for a while, but the latest release seemed sluggish, and took over 2 minutes to boot. When my daughter said that the win 10 laptop was faster, I knew it was time to distro-hop. So I picked Pclinuxos to try. So far so good.
    Thanks for your help

    no it doesn't.
your package management software does (synaptic is a graphical frontend for apt).

+1 for moving away from ubuntu.
