sound sometimes does not work

I am a newbee in Linux mint land and these technical phrases don't mean didley to me. Everything is working fine, except my soundcard. Sometimes there is no sound at all, and sometimes there is. As a heavy user of windows I think this is a conflict between an on board soundcard and a newly installed one. On board AK77 Pro (or plus (don't know excactly)) and new is: Sweex 5.1 pci soundcard. Does anybody know....?

Well Ruud...i don`t think you need two soundcards, right? btw what graphical interface are you using? (kde or gnome)
If you are using gnome look in the:
Code:
gnome-volume-control
and see what device is using default!
I guess this is the onboard soundcard:
Quote:
Multimedia audiocontroller: Via Techn.inc. VT8233/a......(rev 40)
and this:
Quote:
Multimed. audiocontr. C-media Electr.Inc. CM 8738 (rev 10)
is the other soundcard on PCI
My ideea is to turn off the onboard soundcard from bios and see if it`s work!
Cheers!

Bobescalin,

I did switche off my onboard audio in the bios and as it seems everything works allright. I assumed by misstake that lunix works more or less like windows (and because windows did not care about these two audiodevices....), but i think this is wrong. Once more thank you for your suggestions, great help.

Greetings,
Ruud
