First of all, download x86 version of Nvidia Driver.
Press Alt+Ctrl+F1, log in as Regular User and execute this :
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
cd /home/marc/Desktop
chmod +x <x86_version of Nvidia>
sh <x86_version of Nvidia>
cd /etc/init.d/gdm start

when you say 'chmod +x <x86_version of Nvidia>'
do you mean chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.08.pkg1.run?
i done those other commands then that and it came up 'Cannot access NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.08.pkg1.run: no such file or directory'
still no luck

It means that file is not in the path. Delete all Nvidia files from Desktop and save NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.08.pkg1.run on Desktop. Execute those commands again.
Type chmod +x NVIDIA and hit TAB key twice. It will complete filename itself.
In case nothing works, execute this
Code:
cd /home/marc/Desktop
ls
cat /etc/lsb-release
Post output here.

where did you download the installer to? you have to use the command 'cd' to go to the directory it is downloaded to
then you do
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA...whatever.run
all you have to do is start to type NVIDIA and then use tab button to complete that way you don't worry about incorrectly typing it in

while in your /home/mark/Desktop folder execute this
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.08-pkg1.run
like I said, the best way is to start typing NVIDIA then use the tab button on the keyboard to autocomplete it, case matters
