Did the update include a kernel update ... can you try your old kernel version. For the same error in Arch the wiki suggests check your in audio group and re-install kernel.

... I know now may not be a good time to mention Arch what happened to the horse!

Fixed it!!

A thread somewhere led me to the idea of deleteing /etc/asound.conf and /etc/asound.state which I did. I restarted alsa, then ran alsamixer and it came up! But still no sound! I then ran alsaconf to reconfigure my card then opened up Xmms and ran an .ogg file which gave me sound!

Thanks everyone for your input. It really helps when someone takes the time to ask questions and make suggestions. If nothing else, it often makes you think about problems in a new and different way that can lead to a solution!
