Post Graphics Driver Problem - Troubles After Installation

I installed this driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05.pkg1.run
for my 9600 GT card, and it worked. I then rebooted, and I was presented to a "low graphics mode" notification. It seems I have to install the driver each time I restart my computer, does anyone know how this can be fixed?

Try running the command "sudo displayconfig-gtk" or "sudo nvidia-xconfig" to reconfigure the graphics settings. Unfortunately Ubuntu tries to use autodetection for configuing graphics cards and it does not seem to do it very well.

I ran those commands, and entered my monitor model and nvidia driver, ran a configuration test:
Code:
robert@desktop:~$ sudo displayconfig-gtk
[sudo] password for robert:
on_button_test_config_clicked()
xauth: creating new authority file /tmp/dcg-Wn7KAq6043/xauthority
Got pid 6063
(0, 0)
checkpoint 1
None
False
Sorry, this configuration video card driver
and monitor doesn't appear to work:

Messages from the X server:
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
Code:
robert@desktop:~$ sudo echo nvidia >> /etc/modules
bash: /etc/modules: Permission denied
