Fn keys not working on my notebook

blnl Just Joined! Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: The Netherlands Posts: 73	Fn keys not working on my notebook I'm using openSUSE 11.0, GNOME on HP Compaq NC6000. Problem: For some reason openSUSE disables some function keys on my notebook. For example, I can't control LCD brightness, can't switch to the external display... It seems as the keyboard layout is messed up. I looked in YaST > Hardware > Keyboard Layout, there is no keyboard layout for NC6000 (another HP computer is selected by default). Additional info: When using Gparted Live CD all Fn keys are working fine. Also in good old MS-DOS I can control brightens without loading any keyboard drivers. I also installed Fedora 11 on my notebook and there I can control brightness as well. Question: What should I do to enable function keys in openSUSE? I would prefer not to use setkeycodes, Xmodmap, etc. My PC knows how to handle Fn keys. Only openSUSE messes it up. By the way during the openSUSE splash screen I can control brightens. It only stops working after login.

Posts: 2,662	Some distributions don't handle laptop capabilities as well as others do. Have you tried recent versions of Ubuntu or Fedora Core? __________________ Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

blnl Just Joined! Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: The Netherlands Posts: 73	Yes I have tried Fedora 11. No such problems there. All Fn-keys are functioning properly. However, I was not able to migrate my /home to Fedora. Put aside the desktop settings such as layout, screen saver... , which were all not adopted by Fedora. The biggest disappointment came from the applications. I was not able to get Skype working on Fedora 11. I was not able to find (and install) mplayer in Fedora repository. Not even migrating my Evolution mail settings was successful. Moving .evolution directory gave me only my mailboxes, but all my settings were lost, accounts, filters, addresses, calendar, Nothing is there. So I gave up and installed openSUSE again. Apparently I'm not experienced enough to migrate from openSUSE to Fedora. It seems I'm stuck with openSUSE.

The rpmfusion repos have a lot of software that Fedora doesn't officially provide. You can get mplayer there, I know.
