Do you really believe this? I'm not sure I do.
I don't think that many linux users are buying brand new hardware to run on linux boxes, instead using older or second hand hardware that has much better support from the linux community, sometimes even kernel suport.

Can you explain what you mean? If you bought an OEM license of Windows XP Home or Pro, especially bundled with a new PC, you are barely paying anything for the software.

I think its the opposite. Why would I buy more video cards for a platform that has a fraction of the games that Windows does?

I agree with you, but for a much simpler reason: They've committed to releasing linux drivers, they should damn well do it right, or not at all.
