I'm using the pre-installed ALSA drivers (it's the latest version), for my Audiphile 2496 card. I can start Amarok and play a file. I see the oscillioscope moving, but I can't hear anything. I'm positive I have made the correct connections to my speakers. What could be the problem?

I also have a built-in soundcard on the motherboard which is to OSS driver "off" (I'm not using it), if that has any significance.

It shouldn't if you have it off. I'd of course just use the one on the board but it's up to you to decide. As for the sound let me see if I can help. Try putting this into the terminal.....

/dev/sndstat

This will let you test and pick a card from a list for you're sound. If you're card is not listed try one of the ESS drivers listed and so on. If that fails then I'll see if I can find the driver for you're sound.

Well, I use the computer for HD recording, and the quality of the built-in card just doesn't cut it. So I need to get Audiophile to work (since I'm an audiophile...).

Anyway, "/dev/sndstat" came up "Permission denied", even when I tried it as root. I also tried turning of the sound driver and then typing the command, with the same result.

At the ALSA website they say my card uses the driver "snd-ice1712 (ENVY24)". That's the driver I'm using (at least it's the one shown at Configure Your Computer->Hardware->Soundcard).

There are installation instructions at the ALSA website, but I don't understand them (not a pro), and doesn't it seem like the drivers are installed already anyway?
