Epson CX5200.

Any advice on which programs to choose to scan some graphic files that have a smidgeon of text that I need to edit? Also, I can't seem to get my system to read this USB four-in-one machine, although I have gotten it to copy, and it prints a test page upon start-up. The instructions that I followed set up CUPS, but I don't really understand how to print from a file. It still indicates lpr. when I ask it to print, and iscan gives me an error message when it starts, of "Could not send command to scanner. Check scanner's status" and of course it is connected. I have internet access through one USB port, and the Epson on the other. Red Hat 9.Thanks if you have any thoughts.
