    yes you can install many different types of widgets.

    My favorite so far has been screenlets.

    You can get many screenlets from gnome-look

    If you use KDE, there is superkaramba which is part of the kdeutils package. You can get karamba themes from kde-look. For gnome, you can use gdesklets.
