Control sound mixer via a script?

This is all part of this alarm clock project I'm working on. I'm curious as to whether or not there is some way to turn up the sound on the computer all the way, and with the balance all the way, via a script. I know I can get some weird TUI/GUI by typing alsamixer into the terminal, but I'm looking for something better.

Is there a command to control the sound mixer via script?
