I don't have anything intelligent to say, but nobody else has said anything, and it's been 12 hours, so I'll say something stupid.

    Try googling this:
    Code:
    linux embedded systems
and see whether any links you find there (including the wikipedia link) give you any ideas.

    Hope this helps.

    asking about guide

If you want more choice than the 920 sites proposed by wje_lf, try (linux "embedded systems"). That gives you 2.2 million sites.
If you can't find something relevant in that lot I can only suggest that you develop an interest in something else.
    Good luck.

I've been thinking about mesh networks recently.

How about a device that will connect a computer to a mesh network of the same devices. Usb on one end, full duplex wireless on the other. Embedded Linux to manage access to the mesh.

It'd be really handy if you could cram all of that onto easily available hardware so we could buy bits and build them ourselves.

    Chris...

Try googling (database "embedded systems" +Linux). You may find that more helpful.
