How to Track Why the Apache went down?

    Hi Guys,

Can any one guide me how to find the root cause for why Apache was down?

We had an issue yesterday regarding with Apache server.
We have restarted apache with script : ./apachectl start. But is not able to start at the first instatnt.so we checked the log files, we seen some message that not able to connect port:80 and not able to connect rewrite.log(may the file is too big).so we have deleted it and again restarted apache. After that also not able to start.so we have killed some of of the processes then again started. At last we succeded.

so,any one can help me how to track which the exact problem.Just give me some procedure in low level how can i find the root cause.

    Regards,
    Raj.
