Hello there,
A lot of people would recommend against learning Perl, and even though I like Perl and use it regularly, I will agree with them. Again, I like Perl, but I don't believe it's a good first language. I'd suggest learning Python first, as its syntax is very clear and it's a very easy-to-understand language. After Python, I recommend learning C to get a handle on how things work in the low-level, and then Perl just to see if you like it. Perl's not for everyone, but for those that it does appeal to, it's great. If you're still interested in learning more languages after these, make another post. I have a whole list of suggestions. =DFlies of a particular kind, i.e. time-flies, are fond of an arrow.

Welcome to the forums!
Both, Python and Ruby seem to be quite popular these days. Maybe try one, or both. Hope you have fun with it.oz

There are lots of good hard copy books available to get you started, but there are also lots of free online tutorials that you can subject yourself to that might help you to decide for sure which language you want to pursue.
Just do some googling for tutorials for the language you are interested in and you'll find more links than you'll have time to look at.
Hope it works out for you.oz
