Looking for a simple distro for programming
I recently started a few classes in computer programming and have been using CentOS while on campus. The old laptop I have wont even support CentOS, but I am looking for a different distro that will be compatible with my old computer, and still be able to run GCC (compiler) and a text editor (preferrably Gvim). The laptop I have has 550 MHz processor, 120 MB Ram, and 5 GB HDD. I dont care how basic the distro is, so long as i can use a reliable compiler and text editor with it. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

Pretty much any distro should work for programming needs once you have all the necessary applications installed, but some distros might have more of what you need by default, while others might be easier to use when it comes to actually installing additional packages.
You can check this poll for favorite distro for older/weaker computer hardware, as voted by our membership.
Hope it all goes well for you.oz
