say i am taking a look at the old linux kernels and when i try to make it it says that i need gas but i cannot find an install of any sort for it does any body know where i can get it or an assembler that will work and has the -c option

The GNU assembler can be found as part of the GNU binutils at
GNU Binutils
for dates back to 1996.
If you need an even older version than that, we possibly can dig it out as well.Debian GNU/Linux -- You know you want it.
