i can't install ubuntu on my PIII 500mhz, 128mb ram machine
hello world, there is this error i always encounter when try to install ubuntu on my machine "error copying files" or " cannot copy file" just as i am about to finish the installation.
the specs of my machine are 'intel 5oomhz, 128mb ram, 30gb HDD'. i already have windows Xp on it. Due to frequent number of trials to install, it has created a lot of partitions which i have been trying to format.

Your machine doesn't have enough memory to run ubuntu. You could try xubuntu or fluxbuntu. The min req. for ubuntu is 256m and even that is pushing it. Perhaps you should try a more lightweight distro like puppy, dsl, or antix.

This page is what coopstah is refering to excough,
AntiX Minimum Requirements
Xubuntu 9.04 now recommends 256mb of ram coopstah. Get Xubuntu | Xubuntu
I think he can get away with using Xubuntu 8.04 LTS Alternate install though MAYBE with 128mb of ram
Xubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron)
AntiX I would suggest also as te better route to take as there is access to Debian repositories in Package Manager. Plus it will run snappier.
Puppy and Damn Small Linux can be good choices also.

You should also be able to install Gentoo on a system with this little memory.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
