C and texture files

Hi.

I'm quit new in this and i'm wondering how can be the easyest way to see it some file is texture or not.

I have read man file and man magic but i realy can not understand how to use.

So i hope that someone can help me.

i succede with file -i something, which return me if it is executable or texture file.

And now i have problem that i dont know how to use this information, because i wish to use some files only if they are texture kinda files.

so i use in my program funcition system to use shell command, which i get, but ho use this data in if statement.
