    Question help with searching range

    I'm trying to extract specific lines from a flat file. I need lines that fall within a range of coordinates.
    The -F can be either ! or = If the line is in this set range I need all of the data on that line.
    ranges lat 36 to 39 and longitude -74 to -84


    awk -F '=' '{lat=substr($2,1,2); lon=substr($2,10,3); (lat >36 && lat <39) && (lon >-74 && lon <-84); print lat"--"lon}' < net.log

    example line from the flat file
    K4MQF-3>APN383,VA2-2,qAR,N3HF-5:!3818.65NS07800.17W#PHG77306/W3,VA3/Clarke Mnt

    To encourage the best replies, I suggest:
    If you want help or guidance in processing datasets, post
    representative samples of your data (i.e. data that will "pass"
    and data that will "fail") as well as what you expect the
    results to be, instead of trying only to describe it.
    That helps to streamline the solution process, avoiding questions that may arise because of ambiguities, incomplete requirements, etc.

    I would gladly upload a portion of the database but this web site won't allow me to.
    The only thing I could do was one line of the database. because of the characters in the data it says I'm trying to upload URLs
    This is frustrating

    I copied the data you pasted / posted. I placed it in CODE tags and re-pasted it below. That allows it to be more easily readable, see Linux Forums - BB Code List for details on CODE tags (those are most used tags, but there are others).

    You can also attach files, say a "name.txt" file. I don't know if there is a minimum post-number required for that.

    That is what the data stream looks like. The file I have is 1MB and I can't attach it

    The scripts aren't grabbing everything.

    There appears to be a bug in AWK

    this is what the line looks like to begin with.
    KF4OWQ-2>APN391,WIDE2-2,qAR,KF4REN:!3709.02N/08359.28W# LONDON KY

    awk -F '!' '{lat=substr($2,1,2); lon=substr($2,10,3); if (lat > "36" && lat < "39" && lon > "077" && lon < "084") { print lat"==="lon"--"$1 $2 $3} } ' < netc.log | grep KF4OWQ

    Examples:: after running the awk line these dont show up.
    K4MQF>APX201,TCPIP*:=3811.29N/07746.19W`UHF / VHF IGATE
    K4MQF-2>APN383,W1CAR-1*,VA2-1,qAR,K3PDK-:!3811.20NS07746.02W#PHG65306/W3,VA3/Spotsylvania_Va

    Hi.

    In the lines, the "lon" is "077" is it not? If so, then it is not > 077.

    Am I missing the correct lon value?
