    backup on amazon

    Hi all,

Can anyone help me on this:

I created directory (/backups) it has a subdirectories for each of the users. This is for them to put all their data on their specific folder. How can I automatically compressed each of the folders? I know tar and cron is the command to be use. But how? Do I need to write a script? Can you please give me step by step procedures?

This is for the preparation to backup all the data on amazon. Can anyone also help me on how to backup on amazon s3?

Sorry for being noob here. I'm just new to linux. I hope you all understand.

Any help is higly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

as a user not an expert: I have not used cron to do this automatically.
I set up a practice directory and copy some files into it.
Then go to work by using doing the following commands at the bash prompt

    %tar --help | head

    %tar -cf test.tar file1.txt
    %tar -tvf test.tar
    %tar -xf test.tar

    hope this helps

    backup script to amazon

    Hi Guys,

This is my first time joining a forum and I'm very new to bash scripting. Please help me on this.

I'm in need of a backup script which does the ff.

    1. if a file is larger than 5GB. split it and tar the file.
    2. weekly backup file to amazon s3 using s3rsync
    3. if a file is unchanged it doesn't need to copy to amazon s3

I've searched google and can't find a script that suit my needs.

Can anyone post some of their scripts or links for reference which may help?

    Thank you.
