    configure command and compiler options

I do not have much programming experience with running './configure' and then running 'make' or 'make' install, so I have very little knowledge of how this is supposed to work. I am using this configuration technology to build a particular shared library, of which I am not the programmer. Everything works as it should to build the library but I want to change a compiler option when the eventual 'make' is run. I can see in the generated 'Makefile' that a particular CFLAGS option has been set, but I do not see in any other file, such as makefile.am or configure.ac, where this CFLAG value comes from.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to set the CFLAG option I want so that it eventually gets put in the automatically generated 'Makefile" ?

Is this what you need? Or at least a workaround?
