images renaming and manipulation

I am looking for a way to rename a images in a directory (all with random names)
to sequentially numbered files ie blah.jpg, whatever.jpg to 01.jpg,02.jpg

Is there also a way to do this while coverting the images using 'covert'

Yes , you can do it quite easily with a shell script (or awk script , or Perl script or...)
So get yourself a book in one of those.If you want recommendations let us know.

Do you know of any good web references/tutorials on writing shell script? Don't really have money to spend on books at the moment.
