Where to get Java

I need to know where you can get a free compiler and IDE for Java.

You can download it from here:

They also have a NETBEANS IDE there

Also you could possibly use ECLIPSE as an IDE. Its an opensource IDE by IBM. Its Pretty good. Just google it and you'l find it.

There is also the Blackdown Java which provides a free version of Java. They're not at Java 5 yet, so if you need that, go for Sun's version. Otherwise, you might give Blackdown a shot:

As for an IDE, yes, Eclipse is a WONDERFUL IDE. You can find it at:

I would suggest going with Sun's java version 1.5 and using ecclipse as the ide. But it all comes down to personal preference, You should try both ide's and if you feel like it, both Sun's java and gnu's java and see which combination you like best.
