    You can use an specific library like libImageMagick (support for ImageMagick suite operations) or use gdk (low level graphic library for GNOME) that provides some basic primitives to deal with pixels.

    Here is some specification. Using this instruction you'll be able to access a bmp file without any library (in the case).
