    Authentication Failed!!!!!


    Hi ppl my friend is runnin RHEL 5 in his college and when he tries to login as root in Graphical login he gets an error message "Authentication Failed" wat is the solution for this problem.

    Is it only when he tries runlevel 5? Does it happen on runlevel 3 also...

    No it does not happen in Runlevel 3. Now cant I login as root in Runlevel 5 is it dat RHEL 5 has made some restrictions.

    Root login is not disabled in RHEL by default. Are you typing correct password? Are you able to gain root privileges through su while logged in as regular user?
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    While I execute

    After authenticating it returns a "$" shell prompt sayin "root@localhost"

    "root@localhost"
    It means it has provided root privileges. Execute id command. What does it list?
