Just curious... have you tried starting your burning apps from within a terminal to see if you could get a more detailed error message?

What happens if you try burning your DVD directly from the command line? Any error messages?

Here's a good HowTo with instructions for doing so:

when i tried to burn DVD RW using K3B or gnomebaker i got the following error

attempt to re-run with -dvd-compat -dvd-compat to engage DAO or apply full blanking procedure
    Write error

then i tried using the following command

    cdrecord -format dev=/dev/hdc speed=4 gracetime=2

i got the following as output

    [simran@localhost ~]$ sudo cdrecord -format dev=/dev/hdc speed=4 gracetime=2
    Password:
wodim: No such file or directory.
    Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
    the wodim documentation.

    next i tried

    wodim --devices
    and got the output

    [simran@localhost ~]$ wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (1 found) :
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    0 dev='/dev/scd0' rwrw-- : 'SONY' 'DVD RW DW-G120A'
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    and then

    [simran@localhost ~]$ wodim -scanbus
    scsibus1:
    1,0,0 100) *
    1,1,0 101) 'SONY ' 'DVD RW DW-G120A ' 'MYS2' Removable CD-ROM
    1,2,0 102) *
    1,3,0 103) *
    1,4,0 104) *
    1,5,0 105) *
    1,6,0 106) *
    1,7,0 107) *

what else should i do to make it work
