Just curious... have you tried starting your burning apps from within a terminal to see if you could get a more detailed error message?
What happens if you try burning your DVD directly from the command line? Any error messages?
Here's a good HowTo with instructions for doing so:

wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.
next i tried
wodim --devices
and got the output
[simran@localhost ~]$ wodim --devices

and then
