    Samba Issues

    Greetings,
    Trying to configure samba between two computers - one FC2 the other W2K Pro

    From a root terminal:
    smbclient //engagestaff/ -U Administrator password
    Domain=[ENGAGESTAFF] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
    tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
    From GNOME:
    You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Windows Network: engagestaff"
    From the W2K Box:
    \\Localhost is not accessible
    A duplicate name exists on the network.
    From smb.conf
    [My_Documents]
    comment = MyDocs
    path = /home/user/My Documents
    public = yes
    browseable = yes
    guest ok = yes
    writeable = yes

    Anyone see anything obvious?
    Cheers,
    Mike

    You have the wrong syntax when connecting from the Samba box to the Win2k box. Should be this:

    smbclient \\\\engagestaff -U Administrator password

    You need to have double the amount of backslashes as you would use on a Windows machine. You should be using the ip of hostname of the linux box. Also, check the smb.conf file and make sure the servername variable is NOT set to localhost.

    From the windows box you can't use 'localhost' because it will try and connect to itself.
