Dial-up modem slow, then stops with Fedora 7
I have a US Robotics (3Com) V.Everything, 56K, external modem with Fedora 7. Previously, I had Fedora 3 for several years with this modem and all worked well. Now, after installing FC7, data thruput is spasmodic. Using the System Monitor, which gives a running plot of about 100 seconds, data flows for a while, goes to zero for a time, then a little more data and when the no-flow time period exceeds about 20 seconds, the email site times out (or while downloading a file). I could supply a copy of a typical plot from the System Monitor, but I don't know how to do it. I have tried several times to post my problem using my desktop, but I never was able to complete it before it 'hung'. This was done from my laptop using 'that other OS'.
Any ideas about what's wrong and how to fix it? I'm no Linux expert, but I do a lot of work from the command line. My ISP is Earthlink and they claim to not support Linux.
