no, I upgraded to fc6 from fc5 and somehow deleted the user in the process. consequently I had to login as root. this was the situation when I had reported the previous problem.
this time I did a fresh install for FC9-- the "reinstall" option.

    Execute this
    Code:
    lspci | grep -i vga
    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Post output here.
    here they are :
    Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:VIA technologies,Inc.S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter (rev01)
    and
    Code:
    Driver "kbd"
    Driver "openchrome"

Open /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and replace "openchrome" with "vesa".
In case it doesn't work, post the Monitor and Screen sections of xorg.conf file here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

"section" not a valid keyword in this section

    giving up

    sorry couldn't reply earlier.

    here's what I did :

    1) re-installed FC9
2)logged in as root (the normal user is still unavailable)
3)startx ---> warning box saying logging in as root is potentially risky. clicked continue and the desktop shows. all fine and good.
4)try the same later, PC hangs up with the warning box !
    5) changed openchrome to vesa, on startx, a white box floats around on a black background with 'Hz?' written in it !
6)changed to via, says driver not available.

thanks in advance for helping out !
