need help with making a APP a service

I need to find the BEST way to run a app as a service in linux.

Im going to run a php script that will call that app and start or stop it. We currently do this in windows using the net stop service_name and we need a similar way in linux.

The solution should meet the following requirements:

1.) be able to start, stop, restart the service from a php script via the internet.

    2.) be a stable solution.

3.) run any type of app i choose to run this way.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

You could bind a script to a TCP port through [x]inetd as being the easiest way. The "best" was would depend on what program you are running behind the scenes and its requirements.

some choose to simply slave a terminal to the php script and then pass commands that way, in this instance utilizing [x]init as Jason stated.
