Question new to linux. possible video issue

Hi! I'm a newbie to the linux world, i'm taking some classes at college, so i'm learning a lot in a short time. Anyways, I just installed fedora 8 on a pc I have @ home. (1.3 GHZ, 343MB, onboard video.)

When i watch videos, my system just displays them at about 2 fps. In fact, my system seems a lot slower than it was with windows xp. I don't have any server packages installed. I'm sure there are plenty of solutions, including a hardware upgrade, but that's not my angle. I know it worked on windows, so how can I make it work here?

Any hints for the newbie? Thanks!
